Things to do in Aoraki/Mount Cook
Aoraki/Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest peak, standing at 3,724 metres after a 1991 rockfall and ice avalanche shaved roughly 10 metres off its summit. The village sits at the head of the Tasman Valley, 265 km and about 3 h 30 from Queenstown by road, with no fuel available beyond Twizel so fill up before you turn off.
The Hooker Valley Track is the main draw, a 10 km return walk of around 3 hours crossing three swing bridges to a lake studded with icebergs calved from Hooker Glacier. Nearby, boat trips onto the Tasman Glacier terminal lake run past floating ice from the country's longest glacier.
Ski-plane and helicopter flights land on snow weather permitting, and the Mackenzie Basin's Dark Sky Reserve status makes clear-night stargazing here genuinely worthwhile.
