Things to do in Dunedin
Dunedin sits 280 km (3 h 30) from Queenstown, a city of roughly 130,000 known as the Edinburgh of the South for its Edwardian and Victorian stonework. Dunedin Railway Station, completed in 1906, is the country's most photographed building; the Taieri Gorge line still runs from its platforms. 86 (about 35%) near the top.
The University of Otago, founded in 1869, is New Zealand's oldest, and its student population keeps the Octagon's cafes and bars busy. Speight's Brewery, brewing since 1876, runs guided tours with tastings from around NZD 30. Allow a full day from Queenstown, or two if you want the Otago Peninsula included.
