Things to do in Oamaru
Oamaru sits 390 km from Queenstown, a drive of roughly five hours that most visitors break up with a night in Dunedin (110 km further south) or Lake Tekapo.
The town's Victorian Precinct is built from local limestone quarried in the 1800s, and the intact streetscape now houses workshops, secondhand bookshops and the Steampunk HQ, an eccentric gallery of welded-metal machines and locomotive parts that opens daily for around NZD 12 to 18 per adult.
At dusk, small blue penguins come ashore near the harbour breakwater to reach their burrows; a viewing platform charges roughly NZD 10 to 45 depending on seating, and flash photography is banned because it disorients the birds. Coastal temperatures hover between 5 and 20 degrees across the year, cooler than Queenstown's inland extremes.
